Tips on How to keep safe in a disaster

by Pumpkin, Feline Health Editor

What is a disaster? Its a hurricane, tropical storm, tornado, etc. We do not like to think about it but your meowmie and daddy might do a little planning that will save a lot of headache. Some tips are what meowmie has learned though out the years living in Florida with us kitties. To us Hurricane season is the most troublesome.

Here are some tips:

Have a current photo your your pets. Keep these with your important papers. . Meowmie has 2 back packs for us. Hello Kitty for the girls and Scooby Doo for the boys. In these packs are our papers, medical history. Mew can pack your favorite toys and or blankie and some treats.

Microchip your pet (we all are!)

Have two week supply of food and water on hand at all times (meowmie does this through out the year).

  1. Put a collar and tag (with address and phone number) on pets.
  2. If doggie rides in the car keep a leash handy.
  3. Have a back up of pet medications. Keep a first aid kit handy.
  4. Have a cat carrier or evasack for each cat in the house. The carrier has to be big enough for a shoe size litter box, water and food dish, room to lay down. (Pumpkin had that experience during Hurricane George.) That is another story. MOL
  5. Comfort your pet
  6. Know where the animal shelters are in your area. To report a lost pet call 1-900-535-1515. This is a charge call. To report a found pet call 1-800-755-8111.

Check with local media for facilities offering disaster animal rescue and relief. Call 800- 979-0241 and leave a phone number for assistance.
